Teaching Life

I have been teaching high school English for ninteen years; 2020-21 will be my eleventh school year at Newtown High School.

I currently teach ninth and twelfth grade, which affords me the exciting opportunity to witness how my students have learned and grown over the four years of their high school careers. I am also a co-advisor for the class of 2022 and advisor to the school's literary magazine.

I love heated debate in the classroom and when students challenge me; both are indications of intellectual curiosity, a trait I highly value in myself and others.  I pride myself on developing a safe space in the classroom, where students can challenge one another, ask questions, and take risks in order to grow.

Educational Background

I earned my Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education.

UConn's Integrated Bachelor's/Master's Program provided me with many opportunities to observe, student-teach, and intern in a variety of settings, from an elementary school in Willington, CT to Tolland High and Middle Schools, to Bulkeley High School in Hartford, CT, East Hartford High School, and the Hamstead School in London, England.

Daily Life

I live in town with my partner, Kevin, two daughters, and rescue dog, Junie.  I enjoy bumping into students at Caraluzzi's and Fairfield Hills, so if you see me out and about, say hello!

When I'm not teaching, I love to cook, read, and spend time with my daughters.  We spend most of our summer days at the beach or town pool and visiting our favorite spots in town like Dickinson Park, Ferris Creamery, and The Foundry.

I like to write poetry and personal narratives, and I've just recently been struggling to craft a couple of short stories.

PHILOSOPHY

Meaning is not thought up and then written down. The act of writing is an act of thought. All writing is experimental in the beginning. It is an attempt to solve a problem, to find a meaning, to discover its own way towards a meaning.
